SALOME by Alvin Sandler (Sandor) 18 inches high
The step-daughter of King Herod, Salome, holds in her hands the head of John the Baptist. She stares into his eyes as she
moves to kiss his lips. The story of Salome was a popular Christian subject for paintings of the 13th,14th, and 15th centuries.
More recently, Oscar Wilde scandalized Paris with his play
Salome, which was then adopted by the composer Richard Strauss
for his even more scandalous opera. Alvin Sandler assays this grotesque subject in clay, and in a major painting,
Lethe.
