SUNSHOWER oil on panel, 24"x18"
Alvin Sandler (Sandor) © 2003
This view of Bisbee, Arizona by Alvin Sandler
may call to mind the unforgetable "View of
Toledo" in Spain by Dominico Theocopoulis,
El Greco. It is Sandler’s homage to a painting
he first admired as a slide in an art survey
class over half a century ago. Later he saw
the painting at the Metropolitan Museum,
and visited the city that inspired it.
In
Sunshower, Sandler combines several
experiences into one; the town is painted
directly on site, from a rise that leads from the
highway opposite, to the tunnel that
connects it to the outside. The astonishing
sky was earlier memorialized in a tiny study
in oil. The result is a painting of modest size,
bursting with light, space, color, and
incident. A winner at $1500.
