PAINTED CANVAS, Alvin Sandler (Sandor) © 2003
oil on panel, 24"x18"
Substance, space, and light are almost tangible
in this sly "trompe l’oeil" (fool the eye).
Everthing is clear, bright and real. But is it?
Enjoy the brilliant crackalure glaze of the
flowerpot, the soft feel of the flowers, the crisp
folds of canvas, the artist’s pallet and brushes,
which seem to come right out of the painting.
Can one explain the clouds and sky? They
appear to be painted on the canvas, but are
they? We are dealing with illusion here, and
Sandler is exulting in the discoveries of oil
painting, as they were discovered by the early
Netherlandish masters. This is new, but not
modern art. PAINTED CANVAS (actually on
panel) is a lasting feast of illusionist painting,
and is priced at $2500.
