LETHE Waters of Oblivion oil on panel, 32"x24"
Alvin Sandler (Sandor) © 2004
Some recognize the subject as Salome with the head
of John the Baptist. (This was a most popular subject
in the 14 and 15 hundreds in Europe). Others only see
it as a bizzare, even grizzly painting they wouldn’t
want on their living room wall, No fear, it costs $5000.
It is one of Sandler’s finest, and most important paintings.
One can appreciate it from several points of view: from
the perspective of beautiful painting
per se; the realization
of expressive figures; the rendering and integration of
landscape and fantasy flowers; the incredible jewel-like
detail,it is uncommon. For those familiar with the play
"Salome", by Oscar Wilde, or the opera by Richard Strauss,
the painting takes on other layers of meaning: the poetry
of obsession, sensuality and cruelty. It may also be seen
as the artist’s self-portrait for the year 2004, painted
from life, using an arrangement of mirrors. Is it beautifully
horrible? Or horribly beautiful?
