CLEARING IN THE WOOD, original etching, 12"x9"
Alvin Sandler (Sandor) © 2003
This work won for Al Sandler "First Prize in Etching" at
The National Arts Club competition in New York.
"Clearing in the Wood" was published by Original Print Collectors, Ltd.
in an edition limited to 125, plus 20 artist’s proofs, signed and numbered
by the artist. It was advertised nationally, and was an instant success.
A few artist’s proofs are left. Each is a unique print, a brilliant realization
of light, color, and contrasts, created and printed by the hand of the artist.
$250 signed, unframed.
"Clearing" has been admired for its freshness of vision, and its brilliant
and innovative technique. Sandler employs two methods. One is "intaglio",
the method of Rembrandt and Goya, and the great masters. The other
technique, "relief-viscosity", a recent discovery, has been used mainly by
abstract artists because of its spontaneous and unpredictable tendencies.
Sandler is one of the few who have mastered this difficult, but beautiful,
way of color etching. The two methods are embodied in two separate metal
plates, one tonal, the other pure color. These are printed consecutively,
in perfect alignment by the artist, on dampened, acid-free art paper,to
produce an original etching of great power, color, and richness.
